Senior executives in the Intelligence Community play a critical role in safeguarding national security through strategic leadership, operational management, interagency collaboration, and adherence to ethical and legal standards. They must be adaptable, forward-thinking, and committed to developing a skilled and ethical workforce.

The Army Intelligence and Security Enterprise uses two types of Defense Civilian executive positions: the Defense Intelligence Senior Executive Service (DISES) and the Defense Intelligence Senior Level (DISL). DISES excepted service positions are equivalent to Senior Executive Service positions within the federal government. DISES Civilians are leaders and decision-makers; they manage large teams, budgets, and programs. DISL Civilians are leaders and senior technical experts and may serve in a limited supervisory leadership capacity.

Both DISES and DISL positions are crucial for the effective functioning of the Army Intelligence and Security Enterprise. These executives oversee critical intelligence operations and analysis, guide policy development, provide strategic guidance, and develop innovative solutions to complex national security challenges, ensuring the United States maintains a strategic advantage in all matters of intelligence and national security.
