Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation Scholarship-for-Service Program

The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program is a Department of Defense (DoD)-funded combined educational and workforce development opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

In this program, you will serve a 10-week internship each year alongside scientists and engineers at the sponsoring facility; these experiences prepare students for full-time employment within DoD. The program pays your tuition and fees as well as provides a monthly stipend. After you graduate, you must work for the sponsoring organization in a permanent position.

You may also be eligible for the SMART program if you are a current DoD employee enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate STEM program.

The Naval Intelligence Activity has been a SMART sponsor since 2023. The SMART program is critical to filling future permanent STEM positions across the Enterprise.

When filling out your application, make sure you enter “Naval Intelligence and Security” organizations as your employer of choice.

Learn more about the SMART Scholarship Program and how to apply.

In 2023, the SMART Program expanded the scholarship program eligibility by introducing the Ronald V. Dellums Memorial SMART Scholarship (Dellums SMART Scholarship). To honor the lifetime work of Representative Dellums, Congress established the Dellums SMART Scholarship with the goal to increase participation of underrepresented students in the DoD STEM workforce. This opportunity expands the SMART scholarship opportunity to rising college freshmen who plan to pursue a bachelor's degree in one of the 24 SMART STEM disciplines. High school seniors are eligible to apply for the Dellums SMART Scholarship. The Dellums SMART Scholarship is open to all applicants who meet the eligibility requirements.
